Thinking about managers

I’ve seen the argument that United need to hire someone who “knows PL football.” This seems to be used both as a benchmark for hiring someone other than Carrick and as a reason to hire Carrick. Here is what history says:

Out of the 314 PL managers, the only manager to win the PL at one club who had previous coaching experience at a different PL club is Ranieri. Dalglish is a *maybe*, but he coached Liverpool in the old 1st division, not the PL.

Every other PL winning manager won their first league title with their first club in the PL.

Furthermore, if Arsenal do win the league this year (let’s hope not), then I think Arteta will be the first PL winning manager who actually played in the PL.

Not only that, but I’m pretty sure Redknapp, Rodgers, Pardew, di Matteo, Jose, and our Ole are the only managers to not win the title, but finish in the top four who had previous PL coaching experience with a different club. Which means something like 2% of all PL managers have finished in the top four AND had previous PL coaching experience for a different club. Of those, only Jose finished top four with his previous club.

Would suggest that perhaps United should look outside of the PL if they want a manager to lead them to a top four, let alone a title.
