Value of Phoenix Date Palm?
In 2017 I bought a package of Medjool dates for Christmas and accidentally got the ones with pits. I had a potted plant nearby, so I pushed one pit into the soil and forgot about it. A few weeks later, a little “rooster tail” sprout appeared. Over the years I’ve kept repotting it as it outgrew each container.
Now in May 2026, I have a very healthy 7-foot Phoenix dactylifera (true date palm). It’s thriving, but the roots have pushed the base of the plant up so far that I can see the thick white roots at the soil line. It’s basically rattling its cage.
I’m in USDA Zone 6B (WV mountains) where winters regularly drop to -9°F or lower. I don’t have the high ceilings or space to keep it protected indoors for 8 months of the year. I’ve been told to offer it to a business, mall, church, or similar place with good light, or to sell it locally. Someone also mentioned date palms are considered invasive in some states, but I haven’t been able to confirm that.
For those familiar with palms: what would a healthy, 7-foot specimen like this realistically sell for in a cold climate? Any advice on selling or rehoming it would be appreciated!
