I should be happy. But...is it the speakers?

So, yes, it's a first world problem, but I'd appreciate some advice. I've always loved music but family, work etc took over, made some terrible selling decisions (e.g. selling an EAR 834 phono stage) and sort of worked my way back to here.

- Michell Gyrodec

- Linn Majik DSM/3 (with the Gyro going straight into the built in phono stage)

- Tascam CD200

- Cyrus One Linear speakers

The problem I have is that I just think this should sound better than it does. When I go into my local hifi place, kit in broadly the same price range sounds FAR better, so I'm wondering where best to go next.

The turntable was set up properly in situ by the guys from the shop when I bought the DSM, and I have to say I absolutely love the Tascam - must be the best bargain in hi fi history. But, overall, I just feel that it doesn't hang together.

I did, of course, commit all the sins I would warn other people about - I didn't test any of it together, the Gyro was bought because I've loved the look of it for 40 years, the Linn was a bargain, and the Cyrus speakers were a half-price online special.

So - any advice very welcome. Is it just badly chosen kit? I've wondered about replacing the speakers with Neat Iota Alphas, as I don't necessarily want something that's going to dominate the room, or whether the DSM would play better with a pair of Linn 109s. But entirely open to suggestion....

Edited to add photo of setup - thought I'd done it first time!

Very conscious I'm probably preaching to the converted who've seen them dozens of times, but I finally got around to it on Monday in Glasgow (admittedly on a "they're coming, I should probably see them before it's too late" kinda feeling). Three things stuck with me:

- the songs are much better live, some of the early album production was pretty poor so it's difficult to tease out what's going on

- all but one of the people have changed along the way, but Anderson's continued to surround himself with absolutely top-end musicians. John O'Hara on keyboards, in particular, was exceptional

- if I'm jumping around like Ian Anderson when I'm 79 I'll be a very happy man indeed.

In other words, if you're like me and had them on the list but just never got around to it, it's well worth the effort.
