"Second Chance" Magazine Scammers working in West Seattle

Just a warning that door to door magazine scammers are at work in West Seattle again. This guy just came to my door in South Admiral (ignoring my no trespassing and no soliciting signs). Coincidentally, this same guy came to my best friend's house on Capitol Hill about a week ago and launched into his schpiel about how he was from Memphis and was working for Second Chance. For the record, this likely is fraud as Second Chance no longer has anything to do with door to door magazine sales. Door to door vendors in Seattle also are required to have a valid business license and prominently display an ID badge with their license and company. This guy had neither.

I really can't believe that they're still attempting this scam as how many people are buying magazine subscriptions from door to door vendors anymore? But it must work to some degree or they wouldn't waste time doing it. From what I understand these nomadic scammers are deployed in groups, moving city to city. There's also a good chance they're stealing financial information. I hate to think that there might be senior citizens or others who might get conned by the smooth talk.

I was just interested to see Charleston mentioned in a digital Travel & Leisure magazine "Exploring America" edition. Why anyone would think Charleston needs more tourist traffic at this point is beyond me, but that's a whole different episode of Oprah. My greater complaint is that multiple images in the same story were mis-captioned. St. Matthew's Church on King Street was identified as St. Philip's Church. And the lighthouse in the second image was identified as Morris Island light (which now seems to have additional adjacent structures).

A quick Google Images search suggests that the lighthouse pictured in the story isn’t even located in the United States, but actually is the Skagen Grey Lighthouse on Denmark’s Jutland peninsula. Rueful.

I know magazines continue to circle the drain in terms of quality, but one would think that anyone being paid to dispense advice on what to see in Charleston might, you know, actually know what the hell they're talking about.
