Yesterday my 14 year old brother woke up at 6 AM to play football in the park with his friends. Just normal kids, 12 to 16 year olds, playing in the morning.

Then we got a call. Police station.

Bhai mera dil baith gaya. Turns out the park ka mali had a problem with kids playing football on the grass. So he went around and snatched balls from every group playing there. Just took them. Then called the police on these kids.

When police came the older boys ran. My brother and the younger ones stayed because their ball was taken and they didn't know what to do. Police didn't let them leave. Made them call their parents and apologize.

For playing football in a park.

This is exactly why sports don't grow in India yaar. It's not just about money or infrastructure. It's this. Kids getting scared away from sports at the most basic level. My brother is 14 and he woke up at 6 AM on his own to go practice something he loves. And this is what he got.

If you're not playing cricket in this country you're apparently not supposed to play at all.

Yesterday morning, my younger brother (14) went to a park at 6 AM with his friends to play football. Just a bunch of kids, ages 12–16, trying to get some practice in before the day started.

Two hours later, we got a call saying they were at the police station.

Let that sink in. A group of children playing football in a public park — at the police station.

Here's what happened.

The park has a gardener (mali) who apparently has a personal vendetta against kids playing football on the grass. This ground is regularly used by kids and even older players for training and matches — it's not like they were trespassing somewhere. But that morning, he went around and physically snatched balls from multiple groups of kids playing there. Just took them. Refused to give them back.

Then he called the police.

When the cops showed up, the older kids ran. The younger ones — including my brother — stayed back because their ball had been taken and they had no idea what to do. The police didn't let them leave. They made these kids call their parents and apologize.

Apologize. For playing football in a park.

My brother is 14. He woke up at 6 AM on his own, dragged his friends out, and went to practice a sport he loves. That's exactly the kind of thing we should be encouraging.

And this is what he got.

We keep asking why India doesn't produce world-class footballers, basketball players, or athletes in any sport outside cricket. But the answer is right here. It's not just about money or infrastructure — it's this. Kids getting shut down, humiliated, and scared away from sports at the most basic level.

No proper grounds. No support. Just authority figures who treat a child kicking a ball like a law-and-order problem.

If you're not playing cricket in this country, you're apparently not supposed to be playing at all.
