Suzuki Alto Lapin Turbo 4wd

Just wanted to share my new little unicorn find.

I recently picked up a 2010 Suzuki Lapin Turbo 4WD with just over 65,000 km, and I’m honestly way more impressed with it than I expected to be.

What surprised me most is how normal it feels in the best possible way. It doesn’t really drive like a tiny kei car. The engine has this effortless punchiness to it that makes the whole car feel much bigger than it is. Around town it feels smooth, light, and super easy to place on narrow Japanese streets, but it never feels flimsy or weak.

The biggest surprise has been driving up the mountain to my house. I was expecting the usual kei-car struggle, but this thing climbs way better than I expected. It feels eager and relaxed uphill, almost like a regular small 1.2–1.5 liter car rather than a 660 turbo kei. That part genuinely shocked me.

It’s also more zippy on the highway than I expected. Not fast in some crazy way, obviously, but it has enough pull that it doesn’t feel stressed, and it keeps up much better than its size suggests.

The weirdest comparison I can make is that it actually reminds me a little of my old Jeep Cherokee XJ. Not because it’s similar in size obviously, but because of the way it feels on the road — that soft but planted ride, the easy punch from the engine, and the sense that it just takes the road in stride without drama. It has that same kind of relaxed, confident character, just shrunk down into kei-car form.

Such a cool, quirky little car, and definitely not something you see every day. Really happy I found it.
