I’ve been trying to buy a new 2026 car since last Monday (not used, and not a rare model). The issue is that 2026 is the final model year, so they aren’t coming from the factory anymore—but there are still plenty sitting on dealer lots around the country.

I want a specific color and package, and my local dealer didn’t have it. They told me they could trade with another dealer to get the exact car.

Last Tuesday I signed the “front-end” sales paperwork and spoke with the finance manager. He ran my credit and gave me an interest rate (I got the credit alerts). But I haven’t signed the finance contract or given my $35k down payment yet because the car isn’t here—and I’m not handing over money until I see it. Which they haven't asked for the check yet either.

Since then, I’ve been checking in every couple of days. I keep getting “it’ll be here soon,” and now the latest update is that the driver got pushed out.

Meanwhile, I was able to track down the car using the VIN from the window sticker they gave me. It’s supposedly coming from a dealer about 500 miles away. The weird part: that car is still listed for sale on the other dealer’s website, even though my dealer says the trade was finalized last Tuesday and they’re just waiting on transport.

Another odd thing: I’ve already received automated emails from my dealer’s GM thanking me for my purchase and a manufacturer survey asking me to rate the buying experience… even though I haven’t signed the finance paperwork or given the $35k downpayment check.

Is this normal for a dealer trade? Should I be worried that the car is still listed for sale and I keep getting new excuses about delivery delays?

(And no, I’m not going to contact the other dealer and mess up the trade.)
