The biggest criticism the film is facing right now is the lack of enough Mohanlal on screen. All the buildup around his character ends up feeling irrelevant because of how his arc concludes.
If this role had been played by Suresh Gopi, it likely would've been better received by the audience.
Even though Mammootty is the senior-most actor in Malayalam cinema, the average Malayali viewer finds it hard to accept Mohanlal being portrayed as inferior. Mohanlal himself may place Mammootty above him, but the audience doesn't see it that way.
That's the irony. Mohanlal's larger than life stardom is so massive it doesn't just elevate films, it can choke them. Even in a Mammootty movie.

There was a scene in the climax where the minor girl was changing her dress. That scene could have been avoided because that girl was shown as a victim in the movie.

From the beginning, the makers promoted the movie as a multistarrer featuring Mammootty and Mohanlal as lead heroes. However, Mohanlal appeared for barely 20 minutes, making it more of a cameo. The audience expected to see more of their beloved legends and were disappointed with how they were treated.

In the initial storyline of the movie Dosth, Dileep also had a heroine. The girl who was planned as his pair was Kunchacko Boban’s cousin.
However, due to difficulty in getting Kunchacko Boban’s dates, changes had to be made in the script. At that time, Kunchacko Boban was enjoying significant stardom, and there was concern that Dileep might overshadow him. So, Kunchacko Boban’s father insisted that if dates were to be given, Kunchacko Boban must be positioned as the lead. Only after this condition was the shooting started.
Although the movie released and became a success, Kunchacko Boban’s stardom declined within that same year. On the other hand, Dileep rose to superstar level the very next year. The same Kunchacko Boban later had to play a small role in Kalyanaraman, where Dileep was the main lead.
Similarly, some films that Kunchacko Boban had turned down during that time include Darling Darling and Joker.
The movie Dosth didn’t really benefit Kunchacko Boban much as his role was just a typical soft, romantic one. But for Dileep, the character Ajith in that film became a major breakthrough. It marked his transition from comedy roles to an action hero image.
