We lost the most unnecessary points because our squad/club was a chaos early on in the season.
If there is one thing we can work on, and have the power to change, then it is proper squad planning and urgency when approaching the start of the season.
[FB YDK] Saran: "We saw a foul called on a situation that had absolutely nothing to do with the play—a situation that should have warranted a red card. We saw that VAR failed to intervene when it should have. And we paid a heavy price for that"
[Statements] The speech delivered by our YDK Chairman, Şekip Mosturoğlu, at our High Council Meeting
The following is the speech delivered by Şekip Mosturoğlu, Chairman of our Club’s Supreme Council, at the Council’s Regular April Meeting:
“As I begin my remarks, I would like to express our sorrow on behalf of the Fenerbahçe community regarding the tragic incident that occurred in the provinces of Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş in recent days. I pray for the mercy of Allah upon the teachers and students who lost their lives in this tragic incident, and I extend my condolences to their grieving families and our nation. I also wish a speedy recovery to the students and teachers who were injured in the incident.
We have gathered here today following the match result from last night, which deeply saddened all of us. We all know what the draw our football team secured last night means for the Super League championship race. We are all very sad and deeply disappointed. Yet, before the match, as a community, we had focused on the championship goal and were united as one. Last night at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, despite falling behind in the score, our team managed to take the lead thanks to the extraordinary atmosphere created by our fans; however, the goal conceded in the final seconds left our fans with a profound sense of disappointment. This situation has occurred not just once, but multiple times this season, causing us to fall behind when we could have taken the lead. Although our mathematical chance of winning the championship still exists, the reins are unfortunately no longer in our hands, and as of last night, the initiative has shifted to our rival. To ignore, downplay, or attempt to portray this situation differently today would be unbecoming of both this podium and this community.
First and foremost, I wish to state this clearly: It is entirely natural for our fans to be sad or angry. Because Fenerbahçe fans always demand trophies and championships. This club belongs to those who refuse to accept defeat. For this reason, we too deeply feel the disappointment our fans experienced last night.
Of course, there is accountability for these negative results. This responsibility cannot be reduced to a single person, a group, or a momentary mistake. Everyone—from the management to the technical staff, from the players to all stakeholders—shares this sense of responsibility and accountability. However, let us acknowledge that what we are experiencing is not a situation unique to this season. Nor does the full responsibility for this situation lie solely with this administration, which has been in office for only seven months. In my view, the question we must ask ourselves with complete sincerity is this: Why can’t we reach this level in football when we hold an overwhelming dominance in all other sports we compete in? Why? I refuse to accept referee decisions that go beyond mere errors and the double standards that vary from club to club; I do not want what we are experiencing today to become normalized. With this reservation, I wish to address the question of “why.”
Our overwhelming dominance and success in the other sports we compete in are the result of a philosophy that has been systematically built and consistently maintained. Within this philosophy, sustained success has been achieved through the stability of the coaching staff and roster, as well as by developing teams built upon the foundation of the existing squad. All these dynamics that have led us to success in the other sports we compete in operate in exactly the opposite way in soccer. The fact that technical staff and rosters are changed almost like a jigsaw puzzle every season is the root cause of the recurring failures in soccer. It must now be recognized that repeating these mistakes, which have persisted in soccer for years, in the next season will not lead to the right path.
It will become clear that a stable squad built with precision on a strong team framework, coupled with a robust system established by a capable technical staff, can lead us to success—and that in such a system, failure, not success, would be the exception. At this point, the approach of “Let this one resign, let that one resign, let this one go, let that one come” is, at the very least, a form of complacency. A shift in mindset is essential for us in football. This will only be possible through the establishment of a new working model and system where a proven, sports-oriented approach and understanding—not impulsive, emotional decisions—take precedence in football.
Dear members, these observations and assessments are not my personal opinions. They are based on a report prepared last year by a professional living in Germany—an expert in the field—who analyzed the rosters of teams that have won championships in major leagues and in our country over the past decade.
This report is noteworthy for demonstrating the connection between the duration of time players spend training and playing together and the championships they have won. This report has also been shared with our previous administrations.
As of today, the process must move beyond mere evaluation and into direct action. A working mechanism to immediately review the club’s sports infrastructure and decision-making processes regarding football must be put into effect. In line with the principles of transparency and accountability, the current situation must be analyzed with full clarity; necessary adjustments must be made without delay in the areas deemed appropriate. No issue should be postponed, and no shortcoming should be overlooked. Because we are all paying the price, grieving, and suffering together for the steps not taken in time.
Dear attendees, our unity is more valuable today than ever before. Following the elections held just a short time ago, through the mutual understanding and prudent approach of the presidents who competed in the election, we achieved the unity that is our community’s greatest desire. Today, we must not only preserve this unity but also deepen it further. However, being united does not mean shying away from criticism, holding each other accountable, speaking the truth, or avoiding confronting reality. On the contrary, true unity lies in being able to see and speak the same truth together.
Speaking the truth in a timely manner is a great virtue. Delaying the truth or covering it up not only fails to solve any problems but also erodes trust. For this reason, we will not hesitate to speak the truth at the right time and to engage in necessary confrontations. However, at this point, we must maintain a very important balance. No matter how intense our emotions may be, we are obligated to act rationally, without losing our common sense, without hurting anyone, without causing division or fragmentation, and in the best interests of our club. Because Fenerbahçe is not merely a sports club; it is a time-honored tradition, a great responsibility, and a shared value for millions.
I would also like to emphasize this: Fenerbahçe is a club that has weathered difficult times throughout its history, yet has always managed to rise again. The disappointment we are experiencing today is great, yes. But the strength of this community is precisely what emerges in such times. We can only overcome the challenges we face through collective wisdom. The most important thing we must do here today is not to tear each other down, but to preserve our collective wisdom. Criticism will certainly arise—and it should. But ensuring that this criticism is constructive and remains within a framework that does not harm Fenerbahçe is the responsibility of us all.
Let us not forget that this club draws its greatest strength from unity. We are strong not when we are divided, but when we stand shoulder to shoulder. Today, perhaps our spirits are low, perhaps we are angry. However, we must not forget that our community expects us to find solutions precisely on such a difficult day. The High Council and this podium exist for this very purpose. The truths spoken here today must serve—and will serve—the common good of our club. As I conclude my remarks, I wish to state this: This community never gives up the fight. Today we may be saddened, but tomorrow we will rise again. Because that is the character of Fenerbahçe. What must be done today is to generate the ideas and solutions that will enable us to rise quickly.
“I hope that our efforts and hard work will help build a bright future for Fenerbahçe.”
[Statements] Tedesco: "What happened in the final minute was unbelievable. This isn’t the first time we’ve lost points because of a goal conceded in the final minute."
Our Head Coach, Domenico Tedesco, spoke to the broadcaster following our 2-2 draw against Çaykur Rizespor.
Assessing the match, Tedesco said, “I think we played a good game. Rizespor had five wins in their last seven matches. One of the matches they lost was against Trabzonspor, and they probably don’t even know how they lost that one. Because they played well in that match too. Looking at our opponent, we knew this match would be tough. Actually, we played a very good first half. In the second half, we conceded a goal on the second shot on our goal. After that, our team showed its mentality and quality, and we turned the score around. What happened in the final minute was unbelievable. Yes, that’s part of the game. We’re all human—we win together and lose together. Now we need that strength and focus to keep moving forward. This isn’t the first time we’ve lost points because of a goal conceded in the final minute. It happened in the Alanya and Kasımpaşa matches as well. It’s a bit of a crazy situation, but as I mentioned, this is also part of the beautiful game.”
Finally, touching on the Ziraat Türkiye Cup match and the Galatasaray derby, Domenico Tedesco said, "First and foremost, we have a cup match coming up. That match is very important to us. We need to focus entirely on that. A derby match is always a positive experience. I enjoy playing these kinds of matches. My team and my players enjoy playing these kinds of matches. We’ll be giving it our all in that match—just as we do in every match, and as we did today. We’ll probably feel a bit adrift today and tomorrow."
Journalist: At the end of the match, you seemed to freeze up and sat on the bench for a long time. There’s no doubt it’s a huge blow. Mathematically, your chances are still alive, but I’m curious about what you were thinking in those moments—what was going through your mind.
Domenico Tedesco: We always seem to face opponents who are in their prime. We haven’t come up against a team that’s lost five games in a row and lacks confidence. Our clear penalty was reviewed for six whole minutes. The Rizespor players were gasping for breath because they had no energy left; those six minutes were a crucial break for them to regroup. We scored the second goal after the penalty, and the atmosphere was great—but then we conceded that goal with just 20 seconds left. How could I have felt after that? I felt lost. Starting tomorrow, I’ll do everything in my power to secure a positive result. We’ll never give up.
Journalist: Are you thinking of resigning?
Domenico Tedesco: I have nothing on my mind except the upcoming matches. I hope your question is a joke—that’s a crazy question. I’m continuing my work with full energy.
Following our team’s 2-2 draw with Çaykur Rizespor, our players Milan Skriniar, Kerem Aktürkoğlu, and Nelson Semedo made the following statements to the broadcaster:
Milan Skriniar: “I don’t know, it’s very hard to speak after such an ending. Actually, I think we played well. We controlled the game, created chances, and managed to take the lead after our opponent had gone ahead. But then this happened to us in the final seconds. It’s really a very difficult situation for us. I don’t have anything else to say about this.”
Kerem Aktürkoğlu: “First of all, I extend my condolences to those who lost their lives in the school shootings. May they rest in peace. I also wish a speedy recovery to the injured. I didn’t want to make this speech today—I wouldn’t have wanted to even if we had won. I don’t want to make it because we lost points, but some things need to be said. It didn’t go our way today. Of course, we will conduct our own self-criticism; we have to. I don’t know how many points we’ve lost in the final minutes. These are, of course, issues we need to resolve internally. But in my opinion, there is no justification for the foul called in the final minute. If it had been inside the penalty area, the goalkeeper has immunity—we can accept that. He said, ‘The goalkeeper has immunity.’ Based on what? The position was outside the penalty area. He threw himself to the ground and grabbed the ball directly. In my opinion, this is a 100% scandalous decision. This needs to be made clear first. What follows, of course, is a chain of errors... We accept responsibility for our own mistakes. We’re being self-critical; we should have conceded that goal, and the match shouldn’t have come down to this. I’m at a loss for words. I’m sorry we put our fans through another day like this. They came and gave us incredible support—thank you. But we didn’t want to leave here like this. First and foremost, we apologize to our fans. There’s nothing we can do; the season isn’t over yet. Of course, it’s very difficult—we missed our chance—but some things are simply beyond our control. Everyone is aware of that. It was a goal we shouldn’t have conceded in the final minute, but the mistake shouldn’t have been so obvious. Maybe if that foul hadn’t been called, we would’ve scored the third goal—the net was wide open. Oğuz could’ve scored. But there’s nothing more to say. We ask our fans to forgive us and grant us their forgiveness.”
Nelson Semedo: “I think we faced a good team. Actually, we managed to turn the game around after falling behind, but the goal we conceded in the final minute made things even more complicated for us. It made things very difficult for us. If you make mistakes like that, the consequences are severe, but we need to stay on our path and keep believing. I’m saying this—it’s easy to say, but it’s not an easy situation to handle, and I’m aware of that. Winning this match was our responsibility. We need to do our absolute best to win our next match, one way or another.”
[Basketball] Our head coach, Sarunas Jasikevicius, assessed the victory over LDLC Asvel
Our head coach, Sarunas Jasikevicius, made the following comments to the press following our 81–76 away victory over LDLC Asvel:
“I’d like to congratulate my players and our fans. I’d particularly like to thank the fans who came here and didn’t leave us in the lurch, just as they never do. There was a huge crowd. We could hear them, we could feel them. It was a fantastic feeling for us.
As for the match, we played a brilliant third quarter. Although we performed well in attack in the first two quarters, we made simple mistakes, just as we did in the final two minutes of the match, and our opponents punished us. However, the third quarter was the best we’ve played in a long time. Frankly, I think we turned the game around with our physical and intelligent play. That put us at ease. Leading by a comfortable margin for most of the match gave us the chance to control the game and see what we were doing right and what we were doing wrong.”
