The phone rang, and reality rushed in. Someone was having their worst day and I wasn’t my best.

Urgency had become an annoyance, but it didn’t matter. What should have been concern was replaced by contempt.

Time was short. Even then, my thoughts drifted back to mindlessness. What was left took over.

The only reward I wanted was to be left alone.
