I fried the old one, bought a new one, same brand, frequency, looks, but the controller isn't connecting.

I've seen viruses that can log you out from your account and change the password. You get like a message saying you will be logged out in 5 Minutes. Now my question is, can't you just do Windows + R and type in shutdown -a to cancel it? This might be stupid but I'm actually wondering.
