I have a 2008 prius with ~170k miles on it we’ve owned it since 2009. Over the last two years I’ve had to spend thousands on repairs and I’m wondering when it’s time to call it a day. 1.4k replacing struts, some belt, the muffler and the wheel well liner (can’t remember exactly what) and 1.7k when it got hit while parked and I had to replace the back bumper and tail light. $700 for a valve replacement in jan. I believe it might’ve been another grand for things I’m forgetting. and now I’m getting another valve replaced and the wheel bearing and arms and it’s another 2k.
I’m getting the valve replaced right now but holding on the tire stuff (although I know it’s very necessary) while I think about it. Every time I have these repairs cost over a grand I ask my dad if I should give up on this car yet and he goes on about how much car payments are. but at this point around 7k (if I get the new repairs) in two years + already at 170k miles that seems maybe insane?
I know these are things that need to be replaced after a long time but I’m worried about all the other potential things rotting away that will cost another couple grand next year. I’m feeling stupid for not getting a different car before that first 1.4k repair. I can “afford” these repairs, but the cost is very frustrating. I’ve never gotten a car on my own before, this was formerly my mom’s car, I’m just inexperienced with making decisions like this. What would you do? Appreciate it!! Thank you.
