Upgrading on MH

Need some tips for partner airline as I mainly fly on QF flights.

Looking to book direct return flights ADL to KL later in the year. No rewards seats available so will be paying cash. If I want to fly in business, is there any possibility of upgrading from economy to business at any stage and, if so, what is the process? Or am I best to just buy business seats if I can afford to?

I am Gold FF.

Maintaining Gold - SC question

Gold FF here, my membership year ends June 30.

I heavily relied on DSC, SC on the ground and the PC, PCP and Green tier programs to achieve and maintain this status. Plus the lower threshold for maintenance that has existed until now. I will make gold again this year but, realistically, this will be my lash hurrah and I want to make the most of it.

I am 14 SCs away from gold currently, with the potential of a work trip that would reach the threshold.

However, I also just achieved green tier. I have until August to claim the 50 SCs.

My questions are:

- does anyone know when green tier is being axed? Is there a risk that I will lose my reward if I don’t choose it asap?

- Will I still get my SC rollover from PCP this membership year?

- would you use the green tier SCs now to guarantee gold, or wait until the new membership year (providing I do go on the work trip).

A bit about me:

- I have a Qantas business rewards account

- I travel for work 5-6 times a year

- I usually take 1 overseas trip/year and I tend to use rewards bookings for the majority of these

- I don’t spend money just for points or status, I only hunt for deals when I am already planning on the spend

Accommodation recommendations

Tips for luxury, quiet and beautiful resorts for a married couple in our early 40s in Kota Kinabalu, and perhaps some tours or day trips. We are Aussie.

We love walking, hiking and really anything that immerses us in nature.

I’ve had a look at the Shangri-La which looks great but I’m wondering if it’s a bit secluded if you wanted to see the surrounds. Perhaps 3-4 days there and another 5 days elsewhere?

Happy for any recommendations - open to other nearby countries as well if anyone has any really outstanding recs.

Cheers!

One and done kits

Any recommendations for all-inclusive bundles that would have everything needed to start recording in GarageBand?

I’m a professional singer but really I’d just be noodling around with recording for fun. I get quite a lot of voiceover work (audiobooks, commercials, video games, radio plays etc) so I’d like something that can produce a really clean sound for that as well. I also have a keytar and have been enjoying playing around with some song writing which it would ultimately be nice to record.

My previous experience in recording my vocals has been in audacity with a very cheap USB mic with a pop filter.

I have a fairly new iMac with GarageBand and some good sound proofing. I don’t currently have a working microphone, headphones, pop filter or audio interface. My budget is around $500 AUD.

Has anyone had experience with buying a one-and-done kit that contains all of this equipment and would be a good starting point? Or is it really better to buy different components? Mostly I’m interested in a kit for convenience, but I also don’t want to waste my money if there’s a better way to get set up.

Equipment I have been looking at:

- focusrite Scarlette audio interface

- rode NT-1

(Both of these come in bundles)

- audio Technica AT2035

Very grateful for any recs. Thanks!

Advice for first timers

We are a married couple in our late 30s wanting to head to Bali for 6-10 days in the next few months for a quick getaway.

We love nature, walking and hiking, eating good food and learning about new cultures. We usually spend a lot of time planning our own holidays and do most things independently. However, we really want this to be a relaxing holiday where we have the flexibility to explore but are also open to things like day trips and tours where we can just go along for the ride without thinking too much about it. We also want plenty of down time to relax and read and stroll.

We are less interested in the partying - we love the nightlife in terms of being able to eat out late and wander around, but we aren’t going for a big piss up. We also don’t really love areas that are crowded or too heavily touristed. We would rather feel a bit more immersed in experiences rather than hitting all the crowded instagrammable spots. You probably get the picture that Seminyak probably isn’t our vibe.

Would love some advice from people who sound a bit like us, or perhaps people who have done a bit of everything.

Thanks!

Domestic business upgrades

Just keen to hear the rationale for this situation. I’m not bothered but just trying to understand from a business perspective.

I’m a gold FF, I bid for an upgrade on a domestic flight with the minimum cash offer (around $250). I’ve never had one accepted before but am very close to retaining Gold so thought why not. I’m a savy points collector and rewards seat booker. I don’t care that much about status and tend not to spend money just for status, hence why I didn’t bid more than the minimum offer (and even that makes me cringe on a domestic flight).

The bid was rejected but the business cabin was empty on the flight. Why would Qantas not want the cash offer? They introduced the option to pay for the neighbouring seat so I assumed this might be a similar gain for them.

What am I missing?

There are countless threads in Reddit and beyond about people from other careers who want to explore pursuing medicine, but none that I can find that go the other way. I have gone through long periods of time since becoming a doctor where I wonder if there is something else that I’d enjoy more. Has anyone got real experience or know of any doctors that retrained as nurses or paramedics or otherwise?
