Alcoholic boyfriend
I’m very new to this sub, so forgive me if I come across as naive or stupid.
My (26F) boyfriend (26M) of three years has been trying to sober up since September 2025. As soon as he stopped drinking, he was having pretty awful withdrawal symptoms (vomiting, shortness of breath, shaking, sweating profusely, fatigue, etc.). We thought that it would be best for him to just quit cold turkey, but the withdrawals were really intense.
Since September, he has relapsed a number of times. I only know of three, but it could have been more than that. Today, I decided to take him to the emergency room. He told the nurse that he wants to do inpatient rehabilitation. I’ve never known anyone who’s done this, but in an effort to be supportive I backed him up on it.
I just got home from the emergency room. I told him to text me if he needed me to come back for him, but I haven’t heard anything.
How long is inpatient rehab, typically? How successful is it usually? Does anyone in this sub have any experience with it? When he gets out, what is the best way for his family and friends to support him?
