I’ve tried a lot of AI chatbot sites for deep roleplay, storytelling, and character work, and I finally got around to testing Character AI, since it has always seemed like the flagship platform.
Honestly, I’m surprised by how dry it feels.
It does seem to have better memory and tone retention than many other sites, especially for more mature or grounded stories. But the actual replies are usually only two short paragraphs of prose, and it doesn’t really move the story along or give the user much to respond to unless I send another message first.
That surprised me, because this is the platform that brought so much attention to AI chatbots. I expected stronger scene momentum, richer prose, and more interactive storytelling. Instead, it feels oddly static and boring compared to some smaller platforms.
For all its influence, Character AI feels more like a good memory system attached to a very cautious, low-energy roleplay model.
