What kind of themes/topics would a story need to handle for an "it was all a dream" type of ending to work and prove a satisfying conclusion to the story? Is there any story in which such an ending could possibly work?

So yeah, I've met this girl (let's call her A) on the internet around 4 years ago, and we've been friends ever since. We used to chat daily, but now we only chat around 2, 3 times a week. I wanted to make our friendship a bit more engaged, so I asked A whether we should try watching stuff/playing games on voice call but she refused, cause she's embaressed of the reverberation in her headphones (her family is loud and the microphone picks up all the noise they make even when she's in her bedroom).
I don't really know what else we could do together that doesn't include meeting up in person, since we barely get any time when we're both online at the same time. I suggested we play online games (since neither of us owns any multiplayer games) like idk chess or something, but A said it was boring.
For context: We never ended up meeting in real life. A has some infuriatingly overprotective parents, that won't let her leave her town without making a fuss about not knowing every last detail about me (and A is almost 18 now). We live 2 hours by car apart and at least 4 hours by public transport, so I couldn't travel to A's town either, cause whenever I said I could ask my mother for a ride to spend a whole day with A rather than a couple hours, A felt guilty about it (as if it wasn't me who was supposed to feel that way). And no, I don't own a driver licence yet. I've been trying for the past year to get it, but keep failing the exam. Now A started her endevour with getting a driver licence, so maybe this will go somewhere, or maybe not.
I tried to invite A to my 18th birthday party, but she turned it down ultimately, cause her mother got pissed, since A had only told her about this plan a couple months before repeating the request to drive her to the party now with a changed plan (I was supposed to organize the party in my city's centre, but ended up organizing it in my house) which supposedly changed everything.
I'm just tired (and frustrated)... I don't know what else could I propose to take our relationship back on track, so I just keep on asking to do stuff on voice call, even though I already know the answer will be no. Am I the asshole for doing that?
