[TOMT] Late 90's Indie drama "20 something's cast/post breakup/I never reached my potential/stoner friend/broke down car/can't escape this town" kinda film.
I could be fusing a few movies together but I really don't think so.
I vaguely remember the satellite navigation menu saying the title of the movie was "Hanging with [ridiculous friend name]" or "[ridiculous friend name]'s Thoughts".
In the film the main character was going nowhere in life, he was an aspiring writer as I recall he had returned home and there was a romantic subplot (either reunited with an old flame - got burned again or had a second chance at an unrequited love).
He did a lot of smoking dope and venting his frustrations with a carefree zen stoner friend who had a ridiculous nickname. As for the nickname. It was something truly awful like "Burp or Barf or Dirt".
When the main character is at the end of his rope with the town the local mechanic calls saying his car has been repaired and he drives off into the desert for - I want to say Phoenix - for the big opportunities that will surely turn his life around.
It was an abrupt and not very hopeful ending. You got the feeling he would never be satisfied.
Not a comedy but gave off some Kevin Smith vibes. No high stakes. Not surreal, kind of bright but the tone was aggressively normal and bleak. No famous actors. No famous songs in the soundtrack.
I've looked at a few films from this era Go-Getter, Low Life, Slacker and none of these are the film in my head.
Appreciate any thoughts! I'm going to bed but will check this in the morning! Thanks for reading!
