I was buying a new doll recently, one that I've been searching for online but only recently found an active listing for. It was admittedly a large purchase, but it had me thinking... if a doll is rare enough on the secondhand market that I have to actively wait and search for a listing, how are MH dolls that have dozens of listings available being sold for this much of a mark up?
For reference, the doll I purchased was $350, a little less than VH Drac is usually sold for, but it retailed for $180 and it doesn't show up in resale listings very often at all. That's a mark up of a little under 100%, while VH Drac seems to consistently sell for a 400% mark up!!
This seems to be a trend across multiple high-demand skullectors--there's plenty available, but the prices remain sky high. It seems to defy basic supply/demand principles, and I just can't wrap my head around it. Is it the resellers? The fomo from buyers? Are we all just going insane? I don't know, but I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts...
I caved after over a year of thinking about this doll, and I finally have her! This is the first time I've gotten dolls with sculpted hair vs rooted, and also my first bjd! Definitely a super different articulation style than I'm used to, but super posable even compared to something like a MTM Barbie.
The dolls are $35 at Hot Topic, and I ended up paying the same price for these even after shipping and import fees. There's so many people trying to scalp these dolls online right now, but they can still be found for reasonable prices internationally online, especially if you're buying multiple to reduce shipping per doll.
walmart really just out here letting people return anything...
I feel like I didn't appreciate the level of quality enough while we still had it 💔
Inset eyes, full heads of nylon hair, multiple outfits with thoughtful construction and a wide variety of fabrics, full articulation, stands with each doll, etc... There are so many collector dolls out there that don't even touch the level of quality that the first few waves of these lines gave us!
I've heard speculation that this was unsustainable in terms of profitablity, so it was probably inevitable that it wouldn't last forever, but I'll always point to these dolls as some of the best to ever hit store shelves.
