Told hairstylist I have 4 kids

casually in response to her question about any weekend plans:

her response: “oh! that’s 4 too many!”

*awkward silence cause I honestly didn’t know what to say*

”i just like being an aunt.”

I enjoyed high school. I went to a smaller public school in the suburbs and pretty much got along with everyone. I’m in my early 30s now, married, have kids, etc but every once in a while some early 2000s song comes on and I’m back there for a few minutes.

This does not mean I “peaked in high school.” am not at Applebee’s in a letter jacket talking about the big game. I played soccer anyway

But people get so weirdly mad when you admit high school was fun. I remember Elizabeth Bruenig going on a grumpy rant on her pod about how annoying it is that people still talk about high school. She said she hated high school, didn’t go to graduation, and basically told COVID kids that missing graduation didn’t matter because high school doesn’t matter.

I thought that was sad. Obviously not everyone had a good time in high school. Some people had a terrible time. Graduation mattered to some kids. Prom mattered to some kids. Football games and dances and driving around doing nothing mattered because that’s what life is mostly made of anyway.

I had a very boring college experience. I didn’t end up with a single long-term friend from college. But I don’t get mad at people who loved college and had the big fun college experience. Good for them. I’m glad they got that.

A lot of “high school doesn’t matter” stuff just sounds like people trying to turn their own bad memories onto everyone . High school is not the center of the universe, but it also wasn’t fake. It was four years of your actual life. You’re allowed to remember it fondly without having to prove you’re not some washed loser.

as a Minnesota sports fan I can say that my “best” year as a fan here doesn’t really come close to the “worst” season to be a Boston sports fan.

seeing the Vikings at least just make the Super Bowl once would be a thrill

I grew up in Arlington Texas for part of my childhood

Then I moved to Minnesota a few years back and realized the Midwest has way more intense religious peole.

SSPX Catholics, Catholic charismatics, Bruderhof, People of Praise, The Remnant, Well-Read Mom is based here, big homeschool families, serious evangelical Lutherans, trads, cranks, mystics, business people who work at Target but also happen to have six kids and strong opinions about Vatican II

i never saw so many ford transit or sprinter fans used to haul kids to church or soccer practice

It’s not Bible Belt cultural Christianity it’s way more intentional and intellectual even

Minnesota looks lib but on the ground its full of people taking religion way more serious at lest that has been my experience in the twin cities / Dakota county area
