Car tax question (and a little rant)
I have 3 cars registered in VA - mine, and my 2 kids' cars. One adult child moved to another state 2 years ago, so I reported it moved to DTA. When tax bills came, I got bills for two cars, and not the 3rd...so I was under the impression it was no longer subject to VA personal property tax.
The VA registration runs until 5/27, so didn't re-plate it in the new state. I gave my kid the title and bill of sale so they could date it and take it to the Indiana BMV to register and title it there, but didn't do anything else about the VA registration because it was still valid.
Today, I got bills for the last 2 years of PPT for the out of state car. I went back to read the VA code and do some other Googling/ChatGPT research, and apparently vehicles garaged outside of VA are still subject to PPT at the same rate....so I'm confused as to why I wasn't billed for the last two years.
I called DTA and they said that the reason I wasn't billed was because "DMV is slow about updating their records"....but I haven't updated DMV with anything - I only notified DTA in 2024 that the vehicle had been moved, and they stopped billing me.
SO...I think I have to pay the property tax - if I'm not correct, let me know - I need to have my kid re-title the car so I can get it off my list of taxable properties.
