Mother’s Day is tomorrow…
Broke my heart a bit… We have my step son for Mother’s Day tomorrow. We had such a good day at the renaissance festival today. On the way back we are all talking in the car together and my husband mentions that Mother’s Day is tomorrow. (7years old and has called me step mom before but not daily ect) Kiddo then says “yeah, but I can’t celebrate because my mama is all the way in Ohio…”
Internally in hurt but I play it off and say to him we can do something for her that he can bring with him to mamas house when he goes back.
He also a few months ago saw something in a movie where a kid talked back saying “well you’re not my mom” and he said it to me when I told him it’s time to brush his teeth before bed one night. I didn’t get angry I just replied “even still, you need to brush your teeth.” My husband reinforced it with telling him he needs to listen to me, and he usually does this was a one off. When his dad later asked why he would say this and him saying that to me hurt my feelings kiddo said “I was just trying to be funny.”
He apologized to me in the morning and said he didn’t mean to hurt my feelings.
We normally have a great relationship, and these two situations are the only I can say are “bad interactions” between us. We have I love you more fights daily, he runs into my arms yelling my name when I get home from work, we play together, make crafts together, inside jokes, ect. I love him to pieces and would move heaven and earth for him to be happy. He is such a wonderful little boy that brings joy and life into our home.
So this approaching Mother’s Day I’m feeling mixed feelings and a bit of heart break..
To all the step moms out there who chose to step up to love and care for these babies as our own. Who tuck them in, do all nighter sick duties, cook and clean for them, drive their favorite stuffy to their sleep over so they don’t have nightmares, and all the things we do every day that we may feel go unnoticed. I see you. You are a real parent. You are doing amazing. You deserve to be celebrated too! 💕❤️
