For most of our relationship my wife has had a firm stance on a future move weather wise. No colder than where we are now, Indianapolis, and not approaching the heat of where she grew up, North/Central Florida.

Being from an area with a colder climate I am more of a fan of winter weather. Over time visiting family and friends, her stance on cold weather has evolved to be more about snow removal and communities that have a culture of normalcy and ability to function while there is winter weather.

To really experience winter in these areas we wanted to start doing winter trips to see if it is for her or not.

Any suggestions on communities or cities that offer this experience?

A few additional things we usually factor in:

• In or near nature (mountains, forests, bodies of water)
• Would prefer more liberal areas
• Reasonable (~1-2 hours) from an airport/major-ish city
