2 years misdiagnosed, awful foot pain. Doctors now suspect rare neuropathy, not plantar fasciitis as they did

Hi! I’m a high-level inline hockey player and I’ve had severe sole, toe, and heel pain for almost 2 years. It started only while skating, but progressed to daily burning pain, numbness, tingling, and pain even at rest.

For 2 years I was treated for plantar fasciitis with no improvement. A new orthopedist recently said it likely isn’t plantar fasciitis and suspected neuropathy, so I was referred to neurology. I had an MRI with contrast and ultrasound for this neurologist and was prescribed Pregabalin 150 mg/day, amitriptyline (Anapsique 12.5 mg), and Thioctaid 1 a day.

I haven’t been able to train or skate for 3–5 months because of the pain. The MRI showed no obvious nerve compression or major nerve branch damage, but also no clear cause for the neuropathic pain, just a slight irritation in the tibial nerve region.

My neurologist now suspects a possible rare genetic neuropathic disease (can’t tell which one and don’t have information bout my family, I’m adopted), and mentioned that if medications help, I may return to training, but a biopsy could also be needed to identify the cause.

Today Sunday 10th may I’ve reached 1 week on this medications doses, feeling a little improvement but still not feeling ready to skate and play.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Especially skaters/hockey players with neuropathy-like foot pain? Did medications help enough to return to sport?

Hi! I’ve had severe sole, toes and heel pain for almost 2 years, supposedly triggered by hockey skates (I played ice hockey and now inline hockey), worsening from just intense exercise pain only by skating to daily pain, and numbness & tingling at rest. I was treated for plantar fasciitis for 2 years with no improvement, but when consulting recently a new orthopedist he suspected neuropathy, denied it was plantar fasciitis, and referred me to neurology (They think skate pressure may trigger it, but there may be an underlying predisposition).

I’ve been unable to train for 3–5 months, and not just hockey, but everything because it hurts daily, and started taking “pregabalin” and “amitriptyline” 3 weeks ago (low dose) for the pain, but with no effect yet. Doctors still don’t know the exact pathology I may have and are still researching. I’ve done everything to get better but i’m really worried I’ll never return to play or train, or maybe I’ll do but with the same intense pain forever.

Has anyone had any similar case from skating/compression neuropathy? or hockey players? Did meds help enough to return to sport in 1–2 months or to heal the pain?
