Recently my (F18) parents let me know that I am expected to pay rent for my room over my 4 month break from university, this was never mentioned before and was dropped on me while I was in the middle of final exams. They told me that once I get a job, they will be charging me $400/month, and until then I am expected to take over majority of the household chores. Unfortunately I do not have any work experience and it's likely I will only get hired for a minimum wage job, meaning I would have to be working 30 hour weeks and be giving my parents nearly 25% of my monthly income, which I had originally been planning on saving for my university expenses. I am already paying for my tuition, housing, and food by myself, luckily I had scholarships to help cover some of my costs but the rest is coming out of pocket. Even during reading week or winter break I had to pay my parents gas money or buy my own bus ticket to come home. Currently neither of my parents are working, my mom is unemployed and my step dad took a sick leave from work, since December my parents have been to Mexico for vacation TWICE, the first was for their anniversary and the second was a 2 week family trip that included them, my younger sister, and my step dad's parents. Am I bitter about this? absolutely I am, my mom let me know after I had gotten out of the hospital from a stomach bug so bad everyone was convinced my appendix burst. I was telling my best friend about this and she offered to let me move in with her family for the summer, honestly I'm tempted by the offer but I dont want to have to put my issues on her.
