When he first got in, I genuinely couldn’t stand him. Came across bland, spineless, and just another politician trying not to upset anyone. No backbone, no vision, just “keep things steady” energy.

But watching things play out, I think I misread him. He’s not inspiring, but he’s consistent. He’s trying to stabilise things, raise taxes to fund the level of public services people keep demanding, and shift more of the burden upwards. You can disagree with that approach, but at least it’s coherent.

On the economy, a lot of what’s happening is bigger than the UK. Things were improving before global issues kicked off again. Inflation was coming down too before the recent bumps.

He’s also actually addressing things like child poverty, NHS reform, and energy. Not perfectly, but it’s more than just slogans. And whether people like it or not, the lack of constant scandals compared to previous governments is noticeable.

That said, I’m not blindly backing him.

There are a few things I strongly disagree with:

The two-child benefit cap: I don’t think scrapping it is the right move

The Mandelson situation didn’t sit right at all

The Migrant situation: This is where I’m confused as the media make it out to be totally evil but in reality, all parties have their differences and opinions, I’m not sure on what to believe, however, I do feel if you’re here to work and provide in the UK, pay into the system, you’re welcome to stay in my eyes.

So yeah, definitely not a clean sheet.

But then you look at the alternatives:

Tories: completely finished. No direction, no credibility.

Reform: feels like they’ve lost the plot entirely. Just noise without substance now.

Greens: I’ll be honest, this is the one party I don’t agree with them at all. A lot of what they push sounds good in theory but just doesn’t hold up in the real world.

If I’m being honest, I’m still not fully sold on anyone. I’m not a Starmer fan, but I definitely don’t hate him the way I did. If anything, I respect that he’s quietly getting on with it while everyone else either shouts or falls apart.

Restore is still probably where I’m leaning for 2029, but it’s early days.

Feels like we’re in that weird place where no option is great, but some are clearly worse than others.

Has anyone else had their opinion shift on him, or am I just lowering my standards?
