Hi, my 14 week old puppy has been doing weekly puppy class over the past few weeks. He has been very slow to mix in with the other puppies and although he is making progress each week he is still very shy compared to the other puppies in the class who are running around and playing with each other without any hesitation. Our little guy seems to be super cautious about getting involved and you can tell he really wants to but just can't let go completely.

Outside of the puppy class he doesn't get to play with other dogs as he is not on the leash yet and we unfortunately don't know anybody with a small dog for him to play with. So we are very much relying on his weekly puppy class to help with his socialization while he is still under 16 weeks.

I am wondering if anybody has experienced something similar with their own puppy?

Hi, it's my 40th birthday this summer and I am trying to figure out where to go on a little road trip for maybe 5 or 6 days out of NYC. We have been upstate NY quite a lot in the past but never really beyond the Catskills. Anyway that environment is pretty familiar and I am thinking that somewhere coastal like Cape Cod might be better. However I am fully aware that July is peak tourist season and these beach side downs get really crowded. I guess this is somewhat unavoidable in July no matter where you go in the country. I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions? We've never been to that part of country and there is a lot up there like Rhode Island, Maine etc. I appreciate any suggestions if you have any.

I had had my surgery at the very beginning of April. I had a severely deviated septum so I was definitely expecting to feel some significant benefit. Honestly I don't feel any different and my sleep hasn't improved. I am aware that is is still early days in the grand scheme of things but I am also getting a little worried that I might be just one of those people who don't experience much improvement. I am wondering if anybody here is in the same boat or further out from their surgery and not feeling much benefit yet?

Hi, we had two friends call over during the weekend so hang out and meet our new puppy. He has been home with us for almost 2 weeks now and is very confident and playful with us in the home. When our friends came over I expected him to be quite shy and reserved at first but I thought he might warm to them throughout the evening. He was extremely shy however and went in to shut down mode and mostly slept for the evening. We didn't want to force him so he just stayed beside us and napped and played with one of his chew toys for a while. Our friends were very calm around him and didn't get too excited but he still seemed super overwhelmed. Once they left he was full of beans again and right back to his playful happy self.

I know this is probably normal for a puppy his age but I am also a little worried he might become overly shy around people. I read Ian Dunbar's book where he advises having a bunch of friends over to meet the puppy in the prime socialization weeks. Honestly we don't have too many friends to begin with and the friends we have are pretty busy and could only come by during the weekends when not working. We bring him to puppy social once a week also but he has only had his first class last week.

I am wondering if anybody can offer any advice about how to approach this as I am aware that the clock his ticking on his socialization period. I have a good friend who has a small dog and I am trying to get him to come by this week for a few hours. I appreciate any advice anybody might have.

Hi, I have decided to not attend a friend's birthday party for their 4 year old this weekend as I feel it would be too much for our 12 week old puppy and it might overwhelm him with all the kids that will likely want to interact with him. We have been brining him out daily in our neighborhood in a carrier sling to try and help socialize him and also bring him to a weekly puppy social class. We also have some friends coming over this weekend also to meet him and hang out.

I thought at first that the kids birthday party could be another good opportunity to help socialize him but after thinking about it more I feel it would be just too much for him. I just wanted to see if others agree with this or if you think it would be beneficial. If I knew there would only be a few kids I would definitely do it but this is a party in an outdoor park and it looks like there will be a lot of kids running around. Anyway I am interested to hear anybody's thoughts on this if they have any, or if they had a similar experience with their own puppy.

Hi, I am wondering what people think about adding a chew toy to a puppy's crate overnight. I haven't been doing this and he typically sleeps most of the night but sometimes wakes up and starts whining an hour or two before wake up time. I typically get up throughout the night to let him potty so I think he is whining more out of boredom than needing to use the potty. Would a stuffed kong be suitable to add to a crate over night?
