I’m looking for dark romance books with a strong espionage element, where the female lead is an undercover operative, spy, or double agent working within/against a powerful organization or government.

Ideally, she is placed within close proximity to the male lead as part of her mission. Whether he’s a king, warlord, general, commander, crime boss, leader etc. Her role involves collecting valuable information to pass on to her side. He eventually discovers that she's a spy and rather than killing her, decides to use her.

What I’m specifically looking for:

• Strong, capable female lead (Intelligent & strategic. She's not a badass who can fight)
• Morally gray or ruthless male lead in a position of power
• Bad players on both sides
• High-stakes setting (political intrigue, war, criminal empire, covert operations, etc.)
• Slow-burn romance with intense emotional and psychological tension

Bonus if it includes:

• Captor/captive dynamic
• He's obsessive/possessive of her
• Heavy power imbalance and manipulation
• Messy, angsty emotional conflict
• She begins feeling conflicted about where her loyalties lie
• Any genre (fantasy, historical, or contemporary). Would like it to lean dark, character-driven, and emotionally intense and avoids insta-love.
