Dryer making sound upon move-in | Landlord reimburse if I use laundromat?

Hi there. I moved into a new condo on May 1st and noted on my move-in checklist that the dryer was not working. The landlord of this condo is represented by a management.

A technician inspected it and confirmed that it needs replacement parts, which will take 1–2 weeks to arrive. I reached out to property management to ask how I should handle my laundry in the meantime, as a dryer is a provided amenity in my lease.

Their response was:

  • They are currently waiting for the property owner to approve the estimate for the repair/replacement.
  • They suggested I use drying racks for small items and go to a local laundromat for larger loads while I wait.

Since the dryer was making sound the day I moved-in. The maintenance lady said that I should not use it. Now I have a big pile of clothes to wash and dry. Washer works fine. But dryer, no. I feel like I'm paying for an amenity I can't use and shouldn't have to pay extra out-of-pocket for laundry services as it was broken in the timeline I had to provide the move-in checklist.

My questions:

  • Is the landlord/management responsible for reimbursing my laundromat expenses or providing a rent credit for the time the appliance is out of service?
  • Does "waiting for owner approval" excuse them from the delay, or are they still required to provide a solution immediately?
  • Has anyone else dealt with this at the start of a lease?

I want to stay on good terms since I just moved in, but I also don't think I should be paying for a laundromat on top of my rent. Any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated

Hi there, I just moved in new unit 5 days ago. It is a condo, where the condo (landlord) is managed/represented by a real estate company. I noticed the air filter being extremely dusty when I moved in. I suppose it has to be replaced when I signed the lease, but they forgot. So upon request, they said that it is the tenant's responsibility to do it and not their's, but they would reimburse me for the first time.

Is it really my responsibility? And the reimbursement is technically because they forgot to change it upon lease signing. Am I right?

Hi there. I just moved to a new condo landlord managed by a real estate company. It is one bed one den, and because the den is an home office, I share the bedroom with my friend. Now, the bedroom door lock handle is loose, needs repair, and on top of that, has no lock from inside or outside. Though the bathrooms have locks, and the entrance has lock. Shouldn't the bedroom have one too? And is it supposed to be repaired by the landlord's management as I just moved in 5 days ago? Can I request a lock system? Thanks

Hi there,

It is my first time moving to a building which requires tenant insurance so I am a bit clueless. I am turning 22. I have a roommate I have been living with for 3 years. I have to yet buy the tenant insurance and my roommate suggested that we can buy one, and put the other name aswell and do 50-50 as there is already trust setup between us.

Should we buy one together and do 50-50, or buy two seperate? And why

Thanks 😄
