Help me make this work!

Ok, ignore the side of my living room because yes, it’s a mess. The whole room is a work in progress, but this post is about the rug. Yes, it’s too small. Yes, I need a bigger one. I know. But I just absolutely LOVE this vintage Karastan and I refuse to part with it until/unless I find something that I like as much or more within my budget (which will be near to impossible).

Anyway, the question is this.. ASIDE FROM getting a larger rug or a smaller sofa, what would make this look the best? Should I keep it out in front of the sofa with some space on all sides like it is? Should I tuck two of the sides under the sofa and be ok with it ending before the sofa does?

How are we handling vintage hand-knotted rugs?

So I understand that the general rule is for the front legs of your sofa to sit on top of the rug and for it to extend 6-8” past the edge of the sofa. But how are we managing vintage rugs? I want to get one similar to this one that I recently missed on marketplace, but authentic Persian rugs are hand-knotted and often vintage, and I don’t want to damage it. Is it appropriate in this scenario to NOT overlap any furniture onto it??
