I’ve been in therapy for 2 yrs. I see a couples therapist and individual therapist. My individual therapist referred me to an ED specialist because I guess I didn’t realize how bad my ED has gotten.

I scheduled an intake with an ED specialist tomorrow. But I’m terrified because I really like both my current therapists and I don’t want them to drop me. I can’t reduce couples therapy because my wife and I desperately need the support due to my ED.

How do referrals work? Will my therapists cancel me as a client entirely?

I’ve had a complicated relationship with food all my life. Binge eating disorder, purposeful weight loss, purposeful weight gain, now anorexia that’s on and off. Right now it’s dormant and I’m doing well eating and feel really good because I’m on an SSRI.

Both my individual therapist and couples therapist recommended I see an eating disorder therapist but I’m really stable and haven’t restricted in over a month.

Is it pointless to see an eating disorder therapist since I’m doing well now? Is it overkill to see 3 therapists at once?
