Need help setting up a stable wifi network at home
Dear community
In my quest to reach a decent and stable wireless internet connection at home, I have been reading some of the posts on this forum. However, I notice I lack the technical knowledge to fully understand and decide what would be an optimal setup at home. I was hoping someone could help me figure out what I could do to improve our current, unstable setup. I tried asking ChatGPT, and although there is already some
Improvement, it does seem that the current setup is not always stable.
Current situation:
ISP: We do not have fiber connection. Internet provider (Telenet, Belgium) provides through Coax connection.
First connection: Coax cable is pugged into a Modem+router (2 in one), provided by Telenet. (Docsis 3.1 modem/router). It is situated on a far corner in the house, close to walls. (Blue) currently it sends out Wifi
2nd connection: the Modem is connected to a Switch through a Cat6 cable, next to the modem (blue) I took a TP-Link switch TL-SG108PE. I plugged a series of ethernet cables into this, since the house has some wired ethernet connection spread across the house. They are spread across the house (see green for main connections) some of these cables are cat5, some are cat5+.
3rd connection: I have a access point (yellow circle), connected to an ethernet port which fully runs through a Cat5+ cable and supports PoE. The access point is a TP Link Omada EAP650 AX3000.
Current use& issues:
The Modem/router provides wireless internet for the right side of the house, ground floor (U-Shaped, nr1.)
The Access point provides internet for both right side ground floor (U-shaped, nr 1.) and 2nd floor. (Nr.2).
We notice that, especially our phones have some issues when we go through the house, especially when connected to the access point.
Current way I would solve this situation myself:
- put modem/router in bridge mode
- buy an extra router for the center of the house, where the access point is currently located.
- put access points where blue and green connections are located.
Does anyone have any suggestions? If so, could you specify which types of hardware I should buy and where I should locate them? And also which settings (bridge mode or not eg) I should not forget so phones and laptops automatically change internet?
I already got rid of an old Apple Airport that was providing wifi and a system of wifi over electricity. Since these seemed to cause a lot of disturbances.
Thank you very much! I appreciate any help!
Ps, I attached a sketch of the setup. Sorry I didn’t do it in a more professional way. But do not hesitate if it is unclear!
