I am usually highly skeptical of food truck crepes. They almost always end up floppy, overly sweet, and tear apart by the time you take your second bite.

But I finally stopped by Uncle Dan, which is set up right inside the Saint Maxime coffee spot at 560 Rose Ave, and they are doing something totally different.

First off, the batter itself is the star. It is actually crispy. The edges have this dark, mottled browning that almost reminds me of a dosa, and you can definitely taste the browned butter in it. It has structural integrity and holds up to the fillings perfectly.

Here is what we tried:

Lox Salmon: Easily the best savory item on the menu. They cure the salmon themselves, which is wild for a pop-up setup. It comes with whipped cream cheese, capers, and house pickled red onions. For 14 bucks on the Westside, the portion and quality are honestly a steal. It tastes like a high-end deli order.

The Forager: A super savory mushroom mix with ricotta and gruyere cheese. The mushrooms tasted like they were cooked down with white wine. If you want a hearty, savory breakfast that isn't overly heavy, get this.

Maxime's Favorite: Your classic hazelnut spread and fresh fruit crepe. The strawberries and bananas tasted incredibly fresh (pretty sure they use organic produce), and they didn't completely drown the crepe in the spread. It was the perfect ratio.

TL;DR: Uncle Dan is legit. The prices are super fair for the quality of ingredients they are using, and they serve everything in sturdy, eco-friendly, compostable trays. It's definitely worth checking out if you are grabbing your morning coffee at Saint Maxime.

Where do you grab your crepes yourself?

Will definitely be going back for the lox.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself to the neighborhood. I'm Dan, and I recently launched my new food setup, Uncle Dan, right inside the Saint Maxime coffee truck here on Rose Ave, Venice.

I know food trucks are everywhere around the Westside, but

We keep the menu tight and focused so we can do it right:

Lox Salmon ($14): We cure the Faroe salmon ourselves. It is served with whipped cream cheese, capers, and house pickled red onions.

The Forager ($12): A hearty, savory orhanic mushroom sautee cooked down with white wine, organic arugula plus ricotta and gruyere cheese.

Maxime's Favorite ($11): The classic hazelnut chocolate spread from Bellwether Provisions with fresh organic strawberries or bananas. We measure the spread so it balances perfectly without drowning the fresh fruit.

Maple + Butter ($7): Just a crispy, perfectly browned crepe with a drizzle of organic maple syrup and butter. Served in like a cigar roll topped with Maison Bordier Butter.

We are keeping it simple, focusing on the best ingredients and organic(where it possible), and serving everything in sturdy, eco-friendly, compostable trays.

If you are stopping by Saint Maxime for your morning coffee, come say hi and grab a bite. We are really excited to feed the neighborhood!

  1. Uncle Dan Crepes

I ordered the Salmon Lox crepe because it feels like the main item there.

Soft crepe, salty salmon, fresh toppings, and it does not feel too heavy.

Feels more like a small European street food stop than a basic cafe snack.

Best one for me if you want something savory.

  1. Millet Crepe

I ordered their classic Creme Brulee crepe because that is what they are known for.

It is sweet, creamy, and very dessert focused.

The torched top makes it fun and gives it that cafe hopping feeling.

Good stop if you want something photogenic and sugary.

  1. KC's

I ordered their most popular sweet crepe to see what the hype was about.

It was solid, simple, and easy to like, but not super unique.

Good texture, good portion, nothing really wrong with it.

More of a safe crepe stop than a place I would rush back to.

  1. Tsutsumi

I tried the item people seem to recommend most, but it did not really work for me.

The idea sounded better than the actual bite.

Texture and flavor felt a little off compared to the other spots.

Probably my least favorite of the four, not terrible, just not something I would repeat.

Next I want to do a Ktown crepes hopping day.

Any recommendations for crepes or similar spots there?
