Brixton Charlie, 1850.
One of the last night watchmen in London, equipped with a lantern, a cutlass strapped to his waist, a truncheon, and a rattle for sounding alarms. He patrolled the Brixton Road area, keeping watch for criminal activity and fires while announcing the time and weather.
