My partner and I (26/27) are currently planning a long-term relocation from Romania to Austria. We are looking for a more stable, predictable social and institutional environment and are currently at the stage where we are researching the best "soft landing" spots.

We are mid-level engineers, minimalist in lifestyle, and prioritize a functional, quiet life over the hustle of a major capital. We’ve noticed that Vienna is the primary focus for most expats, but we are genuinely interested in cities that offer a better balance between tech career opportunities and a manageable cost of living.

We are fully committed to integrating: we understand that local integration means learning German, and we are ready to start that process as soon as we make our decision.

I have a few specific questions for those living here:

Besides Vienna, which Austrian cities (like Linz, Graz, or others) would you consider "future-proof" for a software engineer looking for long-term stability? Are there industries or regional tech hubs outside the capital that are actually worth considering?

We plan to move first and continue working remotely for our Romanian employer for 3–6 months to bridge the gap while we sort out residency and hunt for local roles. Is this viewed as a logical approach in Austria, or does the local market strictly prefer candidates already holding a local employment contract? Also, is it feasible to do that with ~€4k/net for those 3-6 months?

How realistic is it for a couple to find a decent 1-bedroom flat in a city like Linz or Graz? Is the housing market as overheated as it is in other Western European cities, or is it more manageable?

As a mid-level engineer, how "English-friendly" is the corporate tech environment in smaller Austrian cities? We want to become part of the community, but we are curious about the professional transition period before our German is fluent.

Any honest advice on the reality of building a stable life in Austria, especially for those who skipped the Vienna route would be incredibly appreciated.

My partner and I (26/27, 4 YOE as software engineers) are planning a long-term relocation from Romania to a more stable Western European market. We are currently mid-level engineers, content with our roles, but we are looking to move to a country with a more predictable social and institutional environment for our future.

We are not looking for a get-rich-quick asap move. Our current home in Bucharest is ~65sqm (1 bedroom + living room), which is perfect for us, and we are looking for a similar standard of living - we don't need a large space, just a stable, functional home.

To ensure a soft landing, we plan to move first and continue working remotely for our current Romanian employer for the first 3–6 months. This provides a combined income of ~€4k/net, which gives us a solid buffer while we handle the local paperwork (residency/tax registration) and actively network for local roles. We are fully committed to learning the local language and integrating into the community, rather than staying in an English-speaking bubble.

Given our profile, we’d appreciate your perspective on the following:

Is continuing to work for a foreign employer for a few months while setting up residency a realistic and accepted approach in your country?

How difficult is it for a professional couple with no local credit history to rent a decent 1-bedroom/2-room apartment on the private market? Is there a "waiting list" culture for regular rentals, or is it mostly a matter of budget?

How realistic is it for us to integrate and grow professionally using mostly English in the beginning, while actively learning the local language?

We are considering the Netherlands, Germany, or Spain, but we are open to suggestions. If your main priority was a "boring but functional" country with a healthy rental market & system overall, where would you recommend we look?

We are realistic about the costs and the effort required, so any honest input on which regions offer a better "soft landing" versus which ones are currently too overheated to be viable for newcomers would be great.

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are both software engineers (4 years of experience) from Romania. We are currently in the early stages of planning a relocation to Barcelona, as we are drawn to the city's climate, culture, and vibrant tech scene.

We’ve read the wiki and understand the current challenges regarding housing and the cost of living. We aren’t looking to move as digital nomads or tourists; we are looking to settle down long-term, work for local or local-based companies, and integrate into the community as professionals.

Since we are planning for the long term (10+ years), we’d appreciate some honest insights from those who have made a similar move:

Market Reality: We understand that salaries for SWEs in Spain might be lower than in Northern Europe, but how is the quality of life vs. income ratio for a couple working in tech? Is it realistic to maintain a stable, minimalist lifestyle while living in the city?

Financial Transition: We are currently employed as SWEs in Romania with a combined income of ~€4k/net, which allows us to live quite comfortably. Our plan for the first 3-6 months would be to continue working remotely for our current Romanian employer while we settle in and navigate the local job market. We are fully aware of the tax residency rules and plan to handle this legally. Is this a realistic approach for a soft landing, or do local companies prefer candidates who are already 'on the ground' and ready to start immediately with a local contract?

Career Growth: We love our current path as software engineers and are looking for stability. Are there specific areas or industries in BCN where tech professionals feel secure and valued in the long run, beyond the "startup bubble"?

Integration: We are willing to put in the effort to learn Catalan and Spanish, but we know it takes time. How important is the local language in a professional environment?

Community: We are introverted and prioritize stability and a quiet life. Are there specific neighborhoods that are great for quiet living, yet still well-connected to the tech hubs?

We are not looking for a "get-rich-quick" move; we are looking for a place to call home and contribute to. Any advice on the reality of building a stable life in Barcelona would be incredibly appreciated.

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I (both 26/27) are software engineers currently living in Romania. We are planning a move to Eindhoven later this year, as I have fond memories of working there during my university years and we’ve always loved the vibe of the city.

I’ve checked the sidebar and the Wiki for general relocation info. To avoid cluttering the sub, I’ve tried to narrow down my questions to things specific to Eindhoven life:

We are both introverted and enjoy a minimalist lifestyle. Besides the tech scene (which we know is big), what are the best neighborhoods or areas in Eindhoven that offer a balance between a quiet environment and good access to the city center or public transport?

As newcomers, what is the best way to get involved in the local community? We’re not into heavy partying, so we’re looking for recommendations for hobby groups, sports, or social meetups where people are genuinely welcoming to internationals.

We’re planning to live somewhere that allows for an easy bike commute to the city/High Tech Campus area. Are there any specific parts of the city (or neighboring towns) that you would recommend for a couple prioritizing a 20-30 min bike ride over living in the middle of the bustle?

We are already monitoring the housing megathread as suggested in the rules, so we won't post about specific rental questions here.

Any personal tips on adjusting to life in Eindhoven or things you wish you knew when you first moved here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
