Pinky and the Brain took me to Master Rank
Just managed to get into Master with this team! I wanted to log it somewhere besides my phone gallery. Here's explanations for everyone.
Slowbro and G Slowking: I wanted to run dedicated Trick Room team, and I was really happy with how G Slowking (Brain) was performing into a lot of stuff in Great Ball Rank, so I wanted another pokemon that performed well in Trick Room and could also set up Trick Room if needed. Enter Slowbro (Pinky), who can set up Trick Room himself or punish Sneasler leads with Psychic and Charizard and Incineroar with Scald. Despite the Psychic type overlap, these two have a ton of synergy. Pinky is slightly faster than Brain, so that under Trick Room, Brain can Chilling Reception to change the weather and Pinky can immediately launch a 100% accurate Blizzard. Not to mention, cycling with Chilling Reception or just hard swapping means that Regenerator on both of them procs often, and very few leads threaten both of them with fainting at the same time. It is difficult to prevent one of them from setting up Trick Room and swapping out. And they can both swap back in the midgame under either the remainder of Chilly Reception or Abom's Snow Warning and start setting up Trick Room and spamming Blizzards. Both appreciate the combination of Leftovers and Sitrus Berry to increase their staying power. They are as much responsible for doing damage as they are setting up weather and taking damage, and I've actually had many games where one of them will lead and end up being the last one standing. I can't stress enough how impressed I am with both of these two Pokemon. I saw a lot of at least partial trick room, very few are running these two and absolutely no one is running them together.
Whimsicott: If the opposing team has a ton of Dark Types or Ghost types to scare the Slowbros away, however, Whimsicott with a Focus Sash serves as an alternate lead against things like Kingambit or Dragapult. This is an advantage of developing a TR team without Farigiraf, because it frees you up to run priority support if necessary. Also, I couldn't believe this thing itself got Trick Room until someone used it against me to turn off my Trick Room, I had to try it and priority Encore is all it's cracked up to be. Plus, having 3 Trick Room Pokemon with 3 varying types means it's difficult to predict which one is setting it up, I have successfully used all three to set TR up at different times of the match to secure wins. Taunt also deals with opposing slow supports apart from Sableye, who eats a Moonblast instead, and Farigiraf, who I normally deal with by using....
Kingambit: Kingambit under Trick Room is a menace, being able to Kowtow Cleave instead of Sucker Punch is very strong against opposing trick room users like Farigiraf or ghost types like Basc or Froslass that threaten the Slowbros. But sucker punch is still there to beat priority moves out. Having him on team preview also baits Sneasler leads like fresh pie on the windowsill, which Pinky has been happy to see. Kingambit can absolutely work as a lead if nothing threatans it, and becomes a major threat in one turn under TR.
Abomasnow: If you havent yet tried the synergy between Chilling Reception, Trick Room and Abomasnow, it is well worth your time. A common lead for me is Pinky will set up Trick Room and Brain will Chilling Reception, which shuts down any weather that the opponent leads with, leaving me to swap either King or Abom into turn 1 of Trick Room. Maybe it seems redundant to Chilly Reception into Snow Warning, but Abom also gets Snow Warning when it Megas, meaning the opponent can't even swap in Pelliper, T-Tar, etc to even get rid of it when it Abom starts moving next turn. You can even run Abom as a lead with Protect, but I habitually ran my mega in the back. Earth Power always surprises people, hits Kingambit, Sneasler, Incineroar, and other stuff that thinks it can wall the Grass+Ice coverage. Giga drain because imo you don't need Energy Ball, it's worth it just take the HP restoration because occasionally Abom will appreciate it if Trick Room runs out and he starts taking hits. Blizzard is Blizzard, and yes, more Pokemon on me team know Blizzard than Protect, why do you ask?
Blastoise: This was the slot I struggled the most with, all of this synergy with Abomasnow is great but I still wanted to hide what Mega I would bring. Fortunately I kept running into this thing on Rain teams and I realized how dangerous this was into most things that threaten Abomasnow. Steel Types like Archaludon or Kingambit had to play around Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse covers Froslass and Basculegion, and I also run Blizzard to benefit from Chilly Reception and to have a good spread move not reliant on having high health, AND to have something that eats up Dragonite and Garchomp. I even had to chance it a few times outside of the snow to get to Master, but who hasn't rolled some dice in this game to get here? Mostly everything else falls to Water Spout. This is another reason removing sun with Chilly Reception may not directly boost Water Spout but it is better to have it go off under Snow than Sun or Sand where their Sp Def is raised. I've also found that Blastoise's uninvested, neutral speed is fantastic for this comp. Normally it's too slow to spec to be fast, but too fast to be useable for Trick Room. This actually makes him perfect for this team because he can outspeed teams that are more dedicated to Trick Room than me, and I have had Whimsicott help shut those teams down without using Trick Room myself at all. I've thought about running Shell Smash in the turn that Trick Room shuts down so that he ends the turn once again faster than the opposition, the coverage has been too valuable.
It's a very flexible team, I do think Protect could be a little more widely distributed and it has some weaknesses but I was very happy with how this performed. I took losses for sure, and I know Trick Room is considered kinda corny but I'm glad to have developed mostly my own plan and executed it. I actually almost gave up on Master Rank this season this morning because I thought Ultra 1 was going to be insurmountable, but, here I am, a very happy first time VGC player, and a Pokemon Master.
