Hi, I didn't want people to be worried or start panicking about their own ops so I thought I would just pop on and update everyone!
To summarise, I had a very straightforward RNY op and post op, but almost 3 weeks in I got DIZZY and threw up blood. I had to be taken to A+E and was admitted to hospital for a few days. They did an endoscopy and found a small amount of blood had been oozing from one of the joins, which they clipped and sprayed and injected adrenaline into. I spent 4 days in hospital on a omeprazole drip and was given some iron transfusions. The MOMENT I woke up from them clipping it I felt better. Unfortunately this does mean I'm back on liquids for a few days before I transition back to purees. But it's probably a good thing as I've only had sips of water since Monday evening in case they needed more extensive treatment.
A few people were speculating what I could have done to cause it, and according to the team it was absolutely nothing. (Ironically) I was so worried about messing this up that I have been sticking to the diet and activity rules ruthlessly and meeting water and protein goals, it was just one of those freak things.
To reassure folks, I was told this is very unusual! BUT if you are in the first month post op the symptoms to look out for are:
-Being dizzy when you stand up consistently, especially if it's getting worse
-Vomiting any amount of blood
- blood in your stool, if you already take iron tablets, which I imagine most of us do, then look out for changes in colour or odour or if it is tarry (sorry, a necessary tmi)
- Stomach discomfort that doesn't go away
TLDR: I went to hospital with an upper GI bleed post op, I'm back at home with my cats and my protein shakes feeling fine. It wasn't anything I specifically 'did' so please don't stress if you eat a tablespoon too much puree.
