Got into SFU last year but now below competitive range

I’m kinda confused about admissions this year and wanted to ask if anyone else is in a similar situation.

Last year I got accepted to SFU pretty easily, but this year I applied again and they told me I’m currently below the competitive admission range, although my application is still under review.

When I first got accepted, my Chem 12 grade was around 60, which surprised me because my offer was never revoked. I retook Chem 12 in December and got a 94%, yet now it seems like I have a low chance of getting accepted.

I also realized they may have initially reviewed my application before my updated Chem 94 was uploaded to the Student Transcript Service.

For UBC, I got waitlisted for both Kinesiology and Applied Biology.

Has admissions become way more competitive this year, or has anyone had experience getting reevaluated after updated grades were uploaded?
