UBC does not define you!

I've been recently rejected by UBC after being accepted to an Ivy league school.
I think I can share some of my journey for students who are considering their position or contemplating their upcoming academic careers.

I've been lurking here but have noticed a consistent desire-or even craze over UBC. I think that UBC—and the pursuit of it—should not be how you characterize your undergraduate years as well as high school career as you aim to matriculate to unis.
Here are some my biggest reflections in points:

  1. Please do not spend your entire life grinding an arbitrary, grade-inflated score. A 94 is as good as a 98 if it gives you 4-5 more hours per week that can be used to work on a true passion project or volunteer with major community orgs. I think that one of the biggest reasons for me getting to a say, comparatively "harder" school is the fact that for the most part, they cared more about other parts of the application whereas UBC cares alot about hard metrics like grades (although that is not always the case if you have stellar, and I mean STELLAR ECs--> Major Debate Championships, Regional Science fair award winners etc).
  2. Please do not do a crappy project. Admissions officers see through projects that are meant to do "something" to a community. Every september I've seen 10-17 new "nonprofit projects" with something along the lines of "opportunities" or "by students for students." If that project has no identifiable purpose or rationale or even a central pillar of continued, quantifiable or actionable impact, it may not even translate to a good time spent. If you have the option between starting a crappy "nonprofit" versus spending time with an established community or if in specific professions, BC Youth Council or BC Youth parliament Political orgs, or for health Fraserhealth, Vancouver General Hospital foundation, these groups would provide a better platform for your projects and passions with alot more intuitional connections that give you a substantive edge.
  3. And also, be yourself. Like seriously be yourself. I think that at the end of the day, a true differentiator for university decisions isn't the fact that you are like everyone else, but that you've explored your passions in a truely unique and (very important here), actionable way. You can't just "push for a direction" you have to have something to prove for it. Having a substantive differentiator also allows you to consider some other colleges outside BC or even in the US and thats where I've gotten a likely place for where I'm probably committing!
  4. Even if you are not going to UBC. You can still explore unique opportunities at SFU, Langara, Douglas, UVIC among many others. If you look at legislators of our province or business professionals, You can se they come from a whole consortium of universities, not just the ones we can list off the top of our heads but the pathways that they have individually trod and you can also (with or without the branding of UBC). Truly, having UBC will be awesome, but not having it has NOT hurt you.

As for why I didn't get into UBC? Honestly I don't know but it is a mix of my slightly lower grades (94 something average) and the fact that I stuttered during a video interview. But if I were in your position and to be considered with the options, opportunities that I cultivated over my past few years, I would say that no matter where you are, you can build another path with or without UBC!

worried about losing offer for ubcv eng

hi guys, im from alberta and got an offer to ubc engineering(yay!) but I haven’t accepted it yet since my final grades with the boost for Albertan applicants for math 31(calc), chemistry 30(12), and english 30(12) are 100, 100, and 94 respectively. my grade in physics with the boost when i applied was 99, but currently its a 90. with that grade drop my avg went from a 98.25 to a 96. which is more than the 2% they mention on the requirements page. im trying to finish with a 94 which brings my average back up to a 97. but im currently not sure if i can. im worried about losing my offer once i have accepted which is the reason i havent committed yet. has anyone been or is in the same situation? some personal problems + work are some main reasons i have been struggling lately and the stress of losing my offer hasnt been helping. if anyone can tell me if that much would get the to re-evaluate and revoke my offer i would appreciate it. thank you!

If I withdraw from my Physics and Pre Calculus 12, will it affect my UBC Arts offer?

I’m currently taking online Physics 12 and PC12 but I was thinking of dropping them if I don’t need it. I took them originally for a different major but I got rejected, and I was wondering if It’ll affect my arts offer.

If applying to UBCV Arts, should I do Pre calc 12?

I'm in grade 11 currently, and

I've gotten around 80-88 on Pre calc 11, and I was contemplating on doing pre calc 12 in grade 12. I don't know if it would be an advantage to do it even though I'm only planning on applying to arts.

My other subjects planned to take in g12 are eng 12, ap psych, ap stats, law 12, political studies 12, french 12, and maybe yearbook

Grade 11 subjects are: ap seminar/eng, pre calc 11, history 12, social justice 12, art studio 12, film 11, french 11, life science 11

And avg is 89-90, but I think my final grades are going to be 2-3% better at least.

UBC Under review

For those people still being evaluated, I believe they HAVE TO give a decision before May 1st cause it’s the deadline to accept most university offers and THEY KNOW IT.

BC Provincial Assessments

I took my Literacy 10 and Numeracy 10 exams in January and February this year. How can I check my scores for them? Also, do universities actually care about these marks? My school and some of my friends said they don’t really matter at all, but you still have to take it to graduate.

I also got a message from the school saying that students who are not currently enrolled in those courses but are missing a provincial assessment (Literacy 12, Literacy 10, or Numeracy 10) can complete them during make-up sessions in the library later this week. I want to redo Literacy 10, and I also want to take Literacy 12 for the first time. Is that possible? Has anyone taken Literacy 12 before—what was it like and was it difficult?

For the schedule, does that mean I can choose my own date and time, or will the school assign it for me? Like, does UBC, UTotonto, McMaster, Queens, Waterloo actually care about this, and can it affect my grades or admission? Also, are there any good resources to help prepare for the test?

UBC Presidential / Centennial Scholarship?

Does anyone know how many presidential scholarships are awarded per year / faculty? and if they truly are for your first choice only? Is the centennial scholarship also only for your first choice??

My references were called by ubc (2 x for each scholarship…) about two months ago, but I have no clue if I should be expecting anything. I’m waiting to see before locking in a decision but it’s really causing a lot of anxiety (as i’m also stressing over the ap lit exam and the impending doom that is capstone)

Thanks for reading!! Any help is much appreciated:))

a harsh truth some of you need to face

Just because you have "high grades" and "great ecs" does not warrant you admission into UBC. Just because your friend is "super smart" and your other friend who "isnt really that smart" got in does NOT mean that UBC admissions are "weird" or randomized.

I'm so sorry, but so many of you are saying "I had a 97 avg and great ecs and I got rejected!" and I really REALLY don't want to sound mean but... How many other people do you think have an average like that? AGAIN IM NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN... but you aren't special. There are tens of thousands of people applying to ubc from across canada and the world. Only the people who have high enough grades to even THINK about ubc end up applying. That puts you in an incredibly competitive pool. It doesnt matter that most other people in your school seem like they dont have 'good' grades. UBC never finds out about them-- they don't apply. UBC only sees the students who are confident enough in their grades to apply-- people ALREADY meeting the high 80s - 90s mark.

So yes-- you have "good" grades. So does literally everyone else. Yes, you have "great ECs." So does everyone else. (and no, just because you created a nonprofit with 50k in donations does not make your "ec" better than someone else). I'm sorry-- but you do not stand apart from anyone else.

You are competitive in your school. You are probably the top 5-15% at your school too. You are likely not even in the top 40% of the people who apply to UBC. Its about what you look like relative to the group-- not what you look like standing on your own.

All this to say that your grades genuinely are a small factor in what got you rejected/accepted. You can't expect to get into a school thats trying to fish through 10,000 applicants that look JUST like you.

This is coming from a 2nd year ubc mech eng student who got into ubc with literally a 93 average. Apparently thats "dumb" for some of yall.

Will UBC sciences rescind over Calc12?

Hi! I am taking Calc12 right now and am worried about my current grade being a lot lower than my average upon admission offer (which was 94%), currently my grade is at an 82% and by the looks of it I'll probably be staying in that area for the rest of the course..

I heard from a classmate that for general sciences, they don't care about calc12 at all because it isn't a pre-requisite course for that specific major, but I'm not sure how credible that information is.

Is it like if my calc grade is low enough to bring my entire average down, then that's when it matters? Any input is greatly appreciated as I really don't know

Numeracy 10 Assessment

Guys is the numeracy assessment hard? I have it tomorrow and my math grade is fine, but I don’t wanna completely rely on that. I know that it’s just an assessment but do schools actually look at it? Also how hard is it to get a 3 on the assessment, I don’t wanna fumble. Im sorry for these dumbass questions 💔💔

Has UBC forgotten me?

Hey yall, this might be a really really dumb question but I saw a post talking about how their application is still at the evaluating message and the comments talking about how they believe they’ve been forgotten and may call UBC after the weekend. I’ve applied to pharm which is notorious for taking long. Just wanted to ask if I should call UBC or contact them or smth.

UBC is so annoying

These are my grades for this term (I’m not trying to flex, moreover trying to show how pissed I am at them) and I got denied for Engineering. I was like, that’s okay fine whatever but then they also denied my Bachelor of science second choice. I’m still livid, because are you kidding me? Something has to be going on at UBC, the admissions office has to be smoking crack or something (AP Calc, AP Physics, CLC B, Physics 12 from top to bottom)
