How to proceed with my String of Buttons (Crassula perforata)

This little beauty has been getting pretty crusty on the lower parts of its stems and before I chop it to bits I want to see if anybody has any recommendations (I have had quite a difficult time getting these propagations to take in the past when I lived in Hawaii). The stems at the base are also pretty woody/stick like.

It’s kept outdoors and I live in Southern California, it gets a fair bit of sunlight amongst my other succulents so I assume it’s just natural aging of the plant that is the cause, or maybe an over due repotting. It gets same watering regimen as my other succulents pictured, which isn’t very often this time of year.

My neighbor has insanely large one (I’m talking a couple feet!), bigger than anyone I’ve ever seen so I know it can get there. Just trying to figure out my best route forward.

Repotting Pothos - I’ve wrecked the plant

I recently bought a gorgeous Pothos from a big box, not abnormal for me. I’m pretty good with them and have always been able to make them thrive.
With this particular one when I went to take a look at its roots, it was incredibly root bound with a fair bit of dead/rotted roots (i’m talking practically no soil and fused together roots). I immediately went in removing what was dead and savaging what I could, and repotting it into appropriately sized pots, but she struggled :/ I waited a handful of days, but decided water would be an easier way to monitor the root rot.

I’m gonna be honest I’ve never had this happen, but because it was only a $15 plant and I’d rather the plant die then try to save it with $30 worth of soil, I decided to trim back nearly all of its roots and hope that it bounces back. Am I crazy for this? Should I give up on the possibility of saving it and save the counter space lol? Here’s a picture of the current state. Obviously some of the bits are doing better than others but overall she is suffering and I don’t know whether to hold out or not.
