First impressions of R2 at Atlanta Block Party
I got a chance to look at 3 "prototypes" at the Atlanta Block Party (Catalina Cove, Half Moon Grey and Midnight) this Saturday. I woudl encourage anyone considering buying one to go look at them in person. it's well worth the 20-30 minutes to get an up close look. We went around 3pm and there were only 2 people in line in front of me. YMMV
Things I loved:
- Scale of design is really nice - it doesn't appear to be much smaller than the R1S. Unlike other regular/LWB vehicles (Audi Q5/Q7), it's hard to decipher the size difference, they seem very similar
- The rear seat is much larger than a similar 5 seat vehicle (at least as large as a Q7). I thought the trunk area was well sized (also larger than a Q5, smaller than a Q7)
- The roof to rear window design that lets air flow over the roof. It's a nice design feature, see comment below about rear wiper
- Center console has 1 drawer, 2 expanding cup holders and a top loading box. I don't think a 14" laptop will fit in any of them. I've seen videos of the 2 glove boxes adding much more space and likely can fit a laptop.
- Full size (32 oz) water bottle holders in both front doors that hinge outward to accommodate larger bottles.
Things that make me pause about ordering one:
- The left rear touch button to roll down/up the rear window feels like it's going to break... A LOT. If I bought one today, I'd order 3 of these switches with the vehicle for when they break.
- The interior felt cheap to me once you get past the front seat. I could not see much a difference in the upgraded signature interior vs non-signature. I thought the seats were comfortable, would really need to take a several hour drive to be sure. I might also order another sliding cup holder part, these feel like they will break too.
- The trunk area was a spot where I felt like they cut costs, it felt like a $25-35K car vs. $45-55K car. I can't explain other than that's how it felt.
- The trim design around the rear wiper doesn't look great. I wonder how water pouring off the roof down the rear hatch will drain out, will the weep holes get plugged up with junk?
- Storage underneath the rear area appears to partially be for a spare, it's oddly shaped. I would have liked to see this as a sectioned compartment.
- At the event, they only showed 3 swatch options for interior - Black Crater, Coastal Cloud and Black Crater Signature. Coastal Cloud Signature was not on display, however Rivian's website says Coastal Cloud Signature will be available. The Rivian host mentioned that Coastal Cloud would not be available until later this year and didn't confirm that there was a Coastal Cloud Signature interior version. They would sell more if they had Coastal Cloud on display.
- Did not hear the stereo - no speakers in the door so will be interested to see how the production version sounds.
I do think Rivian will sell a lot of them. It's a nice exterior design, price point is good and the interior still feels like an upgrade from a Tesla MY.
