Has anyone made their own batting from wool roving/top? I am also a hand spinner and I have a bunch of wool roving that is unpleasant to spin, but I think would be perfect for the middle of a quilt.

If anyone has done this before, how did you do it, and how did it turn out? Not sure if I should felt it into a single piece, card it into a batt (maybe the word “batting” comes from “batts”?), if I can just use the roving as is, or something else.

I have a pound and a half of roving that I’ve decided is not worth spinning - it was sold as mill ends and there are too many short pieces and rough wool. It’s not quite pencil roving, but not super thick either.

I’m considering whether I could make this into quilt batting - not necessarily for a full size bedspread, but perhaps smaller pieces for oven mitts and trivets and such. I know it must be possible to do because wool quilt batting exists, but I’m not sure how to go about it - should I wet felt it? card it into a batt? Sew it into a quilt sandwich as is? Something else? Wondering if anyone here has made quilt batting before and can give advice!
