As an NRI teenager living in India, I’ve noticed that people my age have become way too comfortable commenting on others’ skin color and appearance. They make jokes about their friends being “too dark” and paint dark skin as something negative. This stereotype is very harmful. Most of the Indian population naturally has darker skin, yet people still feel the need to make fun of their peers for it. Another thing I’ve noticed is how freely some Indians use the N-word, completely disregarding the tragic history behind it. At the same time, these same people listen to Black rappers and use AAVE on a daily basis, masking it as Gen Z “slang.” It’s really frustrating and gets to a point. I don’t understand why they use these racist and derogatory terms while also leeching off Black culture.
