Turns out that old British 3 pence pieces which were in circulation from 1937 to 1970 were minted from a brass / nickel composition. Purchased a bunch from ebay for testing and they do indeed enrgave pretty well, they are 21mm in diameter. Enrgaved with 60w OMG mopa fiber.
