I have been using linux for about 4 months now. I have tried a lot of different music production software on linux but none seem to scratch the itch.

For context I’m a music production student, I work as a radio host but music is the career I identify myself with. Even though since I started using linux i have done more linux than music and that says a lot.

The list of the programs I’ve tried include:

Fl studio through wine (it was my main daw on windows);
Bitwig;
Ardour;
some Chinese AI daw;
LMMS;
Reaper;
Bespoke synth.

Right now i can say that bespoke synth was really fun, i think i would love something of the sorts with more features. Fl studio through wine was a disaster, not even worth talking about, bitwig seemed to work fine and i found it professional, for me it seemed similar to ableton, but i don’t want to learn to use it, i just don’t see it being worth the time. Ardour worked fine for me, I say this because I found a lot of post online talking about how terrible the experience was, i am currently working on a film soundtrack with ardour, so it’s fine. LMMS is like not even remotely close to a usable daw for me, its super primitive. Reaper - it’s okay but i just don’t like it, I find it to have bugs and random issues, i don’t want to solve them because as a daw it’s so detached from the type of music world that I’m used to that i don’t even see it as worth it. Right now all I can say is that if i don’t find something interesting I will probably end up using bespoke synth as a music creation tool coupled with some other recording software to make my music and then just transfer what i need to fl studio on my windows partition to continue my work.

I have been using xfce for a couple of days now and I like to say that I find it better than other Desktop Environments.

Up until now I have tried hyprland, kde plasma and i3. Xfce is the only one that feels stable and reliable, I find other DE’s have issues and almost seem unfinished. This issue may come from lack of experience as I have only been using linux from the start of the year, but I personally think i get around.

I have a couple questions though. Bare with me because they might seem stupid.

The first one and the most important one is related to workspace with dual monitors. I want to have workspaces change on my main monitor and stay static on the secondary. So far i haven’t found a way to set that.

My second question would be about shortcuts. Is it acceptable to configure keyboard shortcuts in xfce? I found the setting where i think you have to set them but i found it confusing so i put it off for now.

The final question is about tilling. Since I worked with hyprland as my first DE I still miss this feature, but I haven’t seem to find a clean way to implement this in xfce, it tiles fine for now if i tile it manually.

That last one i can live without, i don’t need tilling that much but the other two are important for me. If anyone would be nice enough to answer my questions it would be appreciated, thanks ✌️
