Mahlzeit,

nächsten Monat ist es (leider) soweit: mein schöner rückwärtslaufender Ferraris-Zähler wird gegen einen neumodisch-digitalen Zähler ohne diese Annehmlichkeit getauscht.

Hat lange gedauert (fast 22 Monate sind seit der Inbetriebnahme meines BKW und der Anmeldung im Markstammdatenregister vergangen), aber irgendwann geht alles Schöne halt mal vorbei...

Ich habe bisher immer wieder mal mit dem Gedanken gespielt. mir vom Elektriker einen Shelly Pro EM3 installieren zu lassen, für die Statistik und um mit HomeAssistant herumspielen zu können. Habe das bisher aber immer aufgeschoben.

Bräuchte ich den bei einem digitalen Zähler überhaupt noch oder kann ich dieselben Daten deutlich preisgünstiger mit einem IR-Lesekopf, wie es sie ja zuhauf ESP32-basiert zu kaufen gibt, erfassen? Ich bin in dem Thema nicht wirklich drin, daher entschuldigt bitte, falls das eine blöde Frage sein sollte.

I'm thinking of diving deeper into the Apple ecosystem than the iPad I currently have and am considering treating myself one of the new Macbook Neos.

As I've found that I have to pay for most of the basic software on iPad that I can use for free on my Linux computer (LaTeX, git, several text editors etc.) I'm still unsure if that is also the case on MacOS.

So here are my questions:

Is there a decent, free (as in free beer) LaTeX editor like Texstudio for MacOS?

Git should be installable via homebrew. Is that also the case on the Neo?

Are the usual FOSS suspects that many people use everyday, like LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird etc. all available for MacOS or are there any catches I'd have to live with?

Linux has really spoiled me over the years considering this and I was actually pretty annoyed when I learned that I had to pay for most of the most-basic software for my iPad.

And finally... am I right to assume that the Neo will be powerful enough for my "office needs"? Writing letters, working with LaTeX, nothing "heavy".

Can it also do things that require more computing power? Getting myself to learn developing simple (!) apps using XCode comes to mind... at least sometime in the future.

Please bear with me if these are stupid questions. I'm new to Mac and just want to avoid making a (more or less) expensive mistake.
