Why are Ayra Starr and Tyla fans feuding?

I have no idea what’s going on and I’m almost afraid to ask. But the truth will set you free.

I’m not Nigerian/South African, so maybe there’s cultural context I’m missing.

I’m both hyped for A-Pop and Starrgirl and I’d rather remain this way.

Can anyone help me discern what’s happening?

She started out as simple enough: she’s a clever, crafty and fun-loving girl in a modern fantasy world, who organizes a coup against the dictatorship that oppresses her class with a combination of media savvy and battles, with a clear objective.

That objective is: becoming the princess of this world, as she’s always dreamed about.

I’ve however been called out for the colonial underscore that this objective presents, and I’d like to find a new purpose for her, that’s more selfish than “I just want to thwart evil and help people” but still not on that level.

But which one, I can’t think about.

“Seeing her parents again” is too innocent and childish. She’s meant to be an adult in her mid twenties, not a teenager.

“Money” or any variation of it doesn’t really make sense, she’s already a rich celebrity. She’s in the underclass, discriminated against because of that, but she’s rich.

She’s not a “lost princess” reclaiming a throne that’s hers by right because not being of important heritage is just part of the character.

I don’t know what else, truly. Everything else seems pretty petty for a reason behind a war.
