my cat bit his tail for no reason

i am 15 years old, and my cat, an american feline, 5 years old, male, randomly started attacking his tail for no specific reason. it started off just yelling at it, which concerned me but my mom told me to pay it no mind until he bit it badly and it started bleeding, this all happened in one day. we immediately went to the vet and the doctor told us it could be because of irritation (since we clean the floors using cleaning products diluted with water) which made sense, but it was weird that it started now considering how we've been using the same cleaning products from since we got him. we got him back home and took care of him in his room. the next day i went to check on him and his whole room was bloody, he bit his tail again. we went to another vet and the doctor cleaned his wound and wrapped it up (he then stayed there since my mom said she cant take care of him) (we were busy with school and work) the issue is he bit it so badly that it wouldnt heal properly , so the doctor had to do surgery and remove a bone. after a while the doctor tried to remove his cap (the thing u put around his neck) to see if he'll do something again or not, and he bit his tail again. we've done everything, x-rays, MRIs, yet nothing shows anything unusual. for now we scheduled another surgery to remove his whole tail, and they told me to prepare for the worst. does anyone have any idea why this is happening? i would appreciate any ideas/tips!!
