My daughter, Ellie (20F), has a Muslim boyfriend, Mike (29M). His mother is Muslim but not very practicing, and his father is not religious as far as I know. According to the family, the father “symbolically converted” in order to marry Mike’s mother.

Ellie and Mike are invited to a wedding in July, but Ellie has now been told she cannot participate in family gatherings unless she also “symbolically converts.”

Is this actually a thing in Islam, or would Mike’s family consider her fully converted?

Fake names. English is not my first language, and yes, I personally think the age gap is too large, but Ellie is an adult and that is her decision.
