Hi! I have been tasked with choreographing a group dance for my friend’s wedding. We recently practiced what I’d come up with (the wedding is in mid to late July) and found that sometimes we were stepping on our lehengas. Full disclosure my friend is Pakistani and I am white British so I am not in any way immersed in the culture ! (but I can dance.) I asked my Indian friend who got married last year her experience with lehengas as she had a first dance in one and there was group choreography with them too. She said they are hard to dance in but ‘treading on the fabric doesn't really happen in her experience’. I’m wondering what me and my Pakistani friend are doing wrong! Is it the style of lehenga perhaps (hers is long but not too heavy, with a thin petticoat underneath). Mine has what I think is called a cancan attached.… I think it does slip down from my waist which might be part of the issue for me. But lots of lehengas seem to trail the floor and dancers still have no issue. I have watched a lot of wedding and bollywood dances and I don’t think the moves we are doing are inappropriate for the shape of the skirt and yet…. Would be interested to know people’s thoughts.
