Our son was born in the UK this year

I am an Irish citizen , and my wife is a US citizen but also has a UK passport. We currently live in the UK. Neither of us consider ourselves British, and don’t plan on staying in the UK and therefore we are not exercising any right for our son to claim a British passport and will leave that decision to him.

We are currently on a short trip to Ireland and returning to UK tomorrow. Does our son need a ETA to travel? I would have assumed so but when applying for this, his address needs to be listed as being outside the UK. We have applied for Irish passport which is in progress but we travelled on US passport as this issued first. Obviously if the passport from Ireland arrived this would not be an issue .
